Typical of European writing during the reign of Charlemagne and later, about 900 through 1200 AD. There are similarities to the Uncials of the British Isles, and the later Italic hand and modern script styles are descended from this.

This last example shows the Humanistic style, dating to the time from 1400 through 1700 AD and obviously the model for modern typefaces used in most English language books, just as the Uncial styles were the model for Irish type faces and the Pointed Gothic became the black letter style used in Germanic countries. A seventh example, the Roman Square Capital, was traded to a colleague for some marbled paper she made and is thus missing.

A page from a library school assignment in which we were required to create imitations of at least six different styles of manuscript book page. This is an example of the Pointed Gothic style, common in Europe from about 1200 to 1500. Only the style of handwriting was required, but I added colors to several and an illustration to this one. Anthropomorphic rabbits, anyone? ^_^

19-JUN-2007: Here's what Gary found when he went out to feed sheep and horses this morning. The sheep pen fence had become an unintentional trap, and the little vixen we've been seeing, usually with her mom, had a hind leg tangled in it. Mom was nowhere to be seen, but we suspect she was watching just the same.

The baby was terrified, but still curious. The camera made her suspicious but I did manage to get a couple of shots that weren't blurred. No, we didn't leave her hanging just so I could shoot photos. Gary was getting leather gloves and a wire cutter while I did this. I wouldn't let him touch her without the gloves in case she tried to bite. Who could blame her?

Hole in the fence

We had to cut the fence cords to get her free. She was wound up so tightly there was no chance of unwinding her without all of us being injured in the struggle. Fortunately, we were able to make sure there were no wires or plastic still caught on her leg before letting her go. The skin was abraded but not cut, and she favored the leg as she scampered off but did not run on three legs as she would if it were broken. Not once did she try to bite either of us, though she struggled to pull away the entire time. The fence is a total loss. Fortunately we have a spare we can replace it with.

(Draft is slightly elongated because it shows all weft threads at the same thickness when actually the white thread is much thinner than the red.)

Illinois Thresher Co. steam tractor

Made in Sycamore, Illinois, this one got the honor of being the first steamer in the afternoon parade. There were a huge number of steam threshers by different makers in the show, and my limited bandwidth only allows me to show you a couple of them.

Port Huron Engine Co. steam tractor

These were made in Port Huron, Michigan and featured a dual cylinder that made use of the steam twice, if I understand the design correctly. Most of the steamers in the show were very well-restored and painted. They made smoke, but were amazingly quiet compared to the Diesel and gasoline engine tractors. Also, much of the mechanism is on the outside and visible, so you see valve sliders, cams, and governors in operation as they go by.

The 1997 proposal would have subdivided it along the drive that passes from right to left between the large barn (back) and the T-shaped design studios and offices (center.) The concrete silo on this side of the barn contains a three-story apartment built into the old storage space.

Two chassis, the top being the receiver, the bottom being the power supply and audio amplifier I think. No label remains with model information, alas. The one at the center behind the top chassis just says that the manufacturer recommends genuine RCA tubes. I'm betting that the large loudspeaker is one of those "dynamic" speakers that has a large DC choke coil instead of permanent magnets, and the power supply uses that coil as a filter choke. That explains the practice of putting the power rectifier next to the speaker along with the audio amplifier stage.
