Everything growind at that end of the planter bed other than the merigolds grew spontaneously out of a load of half-compested matter from the compost tumbler. Several cucumber plants volunteered, but I cut their numbers in favor of the volunteer tomato plants that sprung up out of the kitchen-fed compost. I transplanted five of the volunteer tomatoes to pots or to other parts of the garden. We'll see if they survive the move. They all looked pretty rugged when last I saw them.
