My name's Ginny, but the only people who call me that are my dad and people who want parts of their body surgically removed with my rocket launcher. Most people call me Gin, and I run a Jenner Mech for hire. I’m about to meet up with a band of military brats. I hate military families, but right now I need the cash. My mech’s called The Raptor, and if you see me coming, either fall in behind me or get the hell out of my way. Incidentally, my favorite liquor is vodka, and my favorite game is Mao. Gin jokes result in a process I lovingly call "bazooka enema."

[One of the few "honerable mercs" Gin likes to put up a badass attitude, but she's loyal to a fault.. to whoever she's contracted by. Once she's been contracted she can't be bought by anyone else, until her current contract is fufilled. After that it's anyone's game.]

I was just trying to take photos of flowers from angles OTHER than head on. So I went from the side, and managed to capture the rising sun. Lucky shot ;)

Golden Fractal

One of my favorite tactics is to lay on the ground and take photos up through the branches of trees. This is a golden raintree in my parents' yard, at night, when it's just starting to put leaves back out. For part of the year the trees just look like huge sticks in the ground. When in full bloom, there are leaves EVERYWHERE. This is an inbetween phase. I love how the leaves look so fractal-like... does science mimic nature, or vice versa?

I didn't actually have to work to get this shot. I just walked outside one morning to let the dog go do his business, and suddenly noticed this gorgeous purple flower in the back garden. I did not cultivate this garden, the previous owner did. I just let it go wild. Anyway, when I saw this flower I just ran in the house and grabbed my camera. So I cheated, this isn't really art :P

This is my favorite photo EVER. I walked outside to take the dog out (this was when I was still living with my parents) and the weather was GORGEOUS. I looked up at the moon, and was inspired. I grabbed the camera and took this shot, along with about three others. This is the only one I really, really liked. Not only do I love the photo, but I also love the memories that this photo inspires- memories of how beautiful the weather was that night.

Equines

This is very, very mixed media. The horses were drawn by hand and colored with colored pencils, the sky is a photo that I took and digitally manipulated, and the grass is a brush from photoshop. This is part of a picture trade I'm doing with Kimira (http://kimira.deviantart.com/) of two of her characters, Star and Nil'Chi. I hadn't drawn horses in a long time, and I hadn't used traditional media in even longer, so it was fun to break out the prismacolors again. Of course my coloring skills aren't as leet as some other people I know, and this is made even more obvious by all the whitespace the scanner picked up (I used a blending pencil, I swear!) .. I'd considered adding a painterly effect (dry brush) to the horses, which actually looked quite nice, but was out of place with the rest of the picture. And it obscured too much detail. Anyway, this didn't take me very long at all (three or four hours?) so I'm going to be doing another pic for Kimira as well. [photo references used]

For Sonia

Several years ago my good friend Sonia asked if she could commission me for a picture of my character Sapphire. At the time I was very unhappy with my artwork, and while I didn't mind giving little "gifts" to people, I never felt like it was could enough to give to someone as part of a "request". When I recently got back into the drawing habit, I realized I might actually be able to complete a commission for Sonia, finally. I obviously need more practice with the medium - while I'm proud of the blending on Sapphire's skin, I haven't practiced with light and shadow with colored pencils. The background was done with crayon, just so there'd be something there other than whitespace. It's actually a little darker in person, the scan didn't pick up all of the color.
This is my (current) avater on gaiaonline.com - I'm amazed at how long this took, or rather, how long it didn't take. I only spent about 3 hours on it! That would be the difference between traditional and digital work!! ^_^ I did add a filter/effect in photoshop: "colored pencil" which gave it a much smoother feel. There are some things I'm really happy with - I like the skirt, and I think the gold/jewelry came out really really well. I didn't know how hard the hair was going to be, since I've never attempted that hair style. I also colored right over my sketch (usually I trace my sketch onto a clean piece of paper) so you can see some of my initial lines. I know the image isn't perfect, but instead of being discouraged (as I used to be by my art) I'm actually encouraged. I can't wait to try again!

My friend Ping and I decided to "reincarnate" our main characters in City of Heroes. His main character is Penguina, the lady on the lower left. She is an ice/ice blaster. But I have two main characters, really: BubbleYumm (top left), a FF/Psy defender, and White Sapphire (top right), an ice/ice blaster. So he remade Penguina as Empress Penguin (bottom right), an ice/storm controller, and I blended Bubs and WS to create BubbleMint (middle), an ice/sonic controller. Ping asked for an image of BubbleYumm and Penguina, since they teamed together back in ye olden days, but I decided to include all five characters. This image took over 30 hours total. The Photoshop file is over 400MB, and over 6000 pixels square.

After seeing the image I did for Ping, my friend Rogh asked for an image of several of his characters. From left to right, they are: Hel's Angel's Zombies, Infernal Glacier (Fire/Ice Tank, the only hero), Hel's Angel (Necro/Dark Mastermind), Baal Chanan (Claws/Regen Stalker), Destrado Baryon (Mind/Energy Dominator), Deathwatch Daughter (Ninja Blade/Dark Stalker), Project 20-05 (Bots/Force Field Mastermind) and Project 20-05's bot. I started work on this in August, after I finished Ping's pic, so it obviously took me well over a month to complete. I don't know exactly how many hours I put into it, but it has to be in the 20-30 range. Needless to say, I'm very happy to be finished. There are some mistakes to be sure, but I'm going to pretend they're on purpose in the interest of excluding too much detail where it would detract from the image. Yeah, that's the ticket.

(Oh, and the towers in the background that you can barely see are from a City of Villains Euro Server Desktop image. Because as much as I suck at inorganics, I suck harder at architecture. :P)

The Fairy Feast

Every year the Fairy King hosts a feast of the harvest. Traditional dishes include pumpkin soup, large ripe fruit, and seed casseroles.

This is my entry for the Science Fiction & Fantasy Monthly Art Challenge (community.livejournal.com/sfmac). The theme was "The Harvest". I was hoping someone would go with a macabre "human harvest" type image, but no one else has submitted an entry yet, so that remains to be seen. For my entry I wanted to show a harvest feast, Fairy style.

I realize nothing is to scale and the perspective is way off, but for once I wasn't going for "correctness". Really, my goal was just to have fun doing this image, and I certainly did. Also, I realize this pretty cliche... but frankly, I don't give a damn. XD

Oh, I used Liz's colored pencil tutorial for this (which I stumbled over via google.. even though I knew she'd done this and I'd seen it before.. I just forgot about it). I didn't do it justice, however I'm much happier with this than I have been with previous colored pencil pieces. I guess that means the tutorial served its purpose. ^_^

The Elemental Temple

Some people call it a temple, some people call it an oracle. It is the Elemental Temple, and it floats in the void like an intricate, living piece of jewelry. One creates one's own gravity around the structure, and so can travel from level to level as if flying. The platforms are made of pearl, the struts of pure gold. Elemental Acolytes wait at every level to help you on your journey.

--

The pearl is actually a photo of a pearl I found on google image search. I tried for about three hours to create my own pearl effect, and while I made some pretty neat looking things, none of them looked like pearl. So the texture on all of the platforms are just the photo, stretched to fit. I really hate that I had to do that, but I just wasn't getting it on my own.

The structure itself was inked via Corel Draw, as well as some of the elemental items (lightning, minerals, trees). Everything was colored in Adobe Photoshop. It took me around 15 hours if I had to guess.

I realize that perspective does not apparently exist in this universe, but I don't see how I could have shown all six levels and actually kept any perspective. I'm sure it would have been possible, but it would have required SKILL, of which regarding the field of perspective in art, I have NONE.

I put a good amount of time into this (hour and a half at least), and I like it, but I feel like it's missing something. Or maybe it has too much, since my first image with this idea has far less in it, but looks better. I dunno. I don't think I'll ever be able to express via art the emotions I feel for him, but it was nice to try at least.

I am so, so freaking disappointed by this. Don't get me wrong, I love the image. That's why I am so disappointed. You see, this was supposed to be a "doll". I spent hours and hours working on a picture of Sapphire. She was supposed to be on her own layer. I was then going to draw different outfits on different layers, so I could show all the different outfits Sapphire is likely to wear. But when I opened the photoshop file today, I discovered that I accidentally merged all the layers before saving yesterday. So I no longer have Sapphire on her own layer - the outfit is attached now.

I don't even have the heart to draw the beaded jewelry, or finish the shading. I feel ill. I want to cry. Ten hours of work shot to hell. GO ME.

This is Aggelakis, my friend Kelci's Empathy/Archery defender. I will be doing two images of Agge: here she is using Recovery Aura, one of her empathy powers. In the other image she will be using one of her Archery powers. And then I'm going to put the two pics together with a creative border and simple background. WOO! [Sorry, all of my creativity seems to have been used up today working on this image, I have none left for snappy descriptions.] I did three separate sketches for this image - I used a photo reference for the second sketch but I still hated it so I threw it away and went back to working off the screenshot. I still think the anatomy got a boost from that photo, though. I'm not entirely happy with her green fist aura, but I can't seem to duplicate the look from in-game. I'm REALLY pleased with the RA itself, even though in-game it would be more faded and trasnlucent... but I think the blue ring just looks really freaking cool. That was three different layers. The green is also three different layers. The hair was two. The final file is 8000 pixels square and over 75MB. Heh. I really should keep track of how much time I spend on these things, but let's put it this way: I started the first sketch over two weeks ago. Actually once I got a sketch I finally liked, it went pretty fast - I'd guess I spent 15-20 hours or so on this? (But that's a total guess..) Anyway.. I'll be starting on the other pic soon...

Crantz commissioned me for an image of some characters of his and a friend's in a Super Group recruiting poster. That's Sailor Mutilation (spines/regen scrapper), Geothunder (stone/stone tank), and Desert Diamond (fire/kin controller). I attempted sketching this several times both on paper and digitally. I think I finally went with a combination of the two. I cleaned the sketch up digitally, printed it, colored it with prismacolors, and then scanned it and touched it up again digitally. The image mostly just needed color correction where the pencils smeared or obscured details. Much thanks to all of my friends who helped me with critiques!

SpeedPaint

I saw some pretty awesome artwork on DA that was painted in 15 minutes. This guy participates in a challenge where everyone is given a scene and tries to paint it in 15 minutes. Well, of course his was far more awesome than I could accomplish if given 40 hours, but I digress. There's been a scene in my head for several months, possibly over a year now. The scene includes Master as Fu-Dog, lounging in the sun, and myself in various forms catering to his every whim. Obviously this is a pretty sucky painting, but I've been trying to get the scene on paper for a long time, and I can't. Eventually I'd like to really attempt this as a real image, but since that's not working yet, this will suffice for now.

Miss Brr

This is for Deuco of his character Miss Brr. I sketched it by hand, scanned it, resketched it digitally, printed it, traced it on a light table with colored pencil, colored it with colored pencil, scanned it, and did a lot of digital touch-up. So like most of my recent artwork this is a pretty good combination of traditional and digital media. I didn't actually plan on doing that much digital cleanup, but once I started I liked how nice it looked so I kept going. You can see the before-and-after digital cleanup image here: http://pics.livejournal.com/kwsapphire/pic/003cd79f

I worked at an extremely high resolution for this image. A friend of mine (Jill) showed me that a plethora of errors can be hidden if you're working at high enough resolution. So you can see the actual size I was working at here: http://pics.livejournal.com/kwsapphire/pic/003ce82e

I couldn't tell you how many hours I spent on this (you think I'd have found a way to keep track by now, alas) but if I had to guess... I'd say more than ten but probably less than twenty. Which is pretty good for me!

I am really very happy with this image. I know, I'm still not as good as a lot of the people on DA, not even as good as many of my friends, but I think this shows a great improvement in my art over the last several years. I keep all my old artwork, and I improved a lot between 1995 and 2000, but then I hit a plateau and stopped improving. Sure, my artwork got a little better, but I really wasn't making the kind of progress that you'd think would come with so many years. But I finally see a lot of improvement and it makes me very happy. :)

This image was an absolute pleasure to work on, I hope Deuco likes it!

Can you break the bond between the Sun and the Earth? Indeed, but it takes the strongest celestial forces to do so. Can you separate the mountains from the Earth? Indeed, though only with the strength of thousands. And who would dare come between a Master and his slave? Perhaps with the entire armies of Heaven and Hell... and even then the endeavour would be foolish. // Medium: ArtRage2 // Time: 6-8 hours
