Although I originally intended this self-portrait to grace my binder cover for the duration of my 11th grade school year, it turned out so frightening that I didn't end up using it. I think 11th grade was the year that I painted an enlarged copy of the cover art from Depeche Mode's Music for the Masses album and used that as my binder cover for the year. Then I pasted this self-portrait into the sketchbook I'd been assigned to draw in for art class, and labeled it "over-commercialized self-portrait." (Pretending that one's mistakes were intentional is often a handy way to cover them up.) I never again attempted to draw a colored-pencil self-portrait from a mirror; all my future self-portraits from mirrors would be in other media. Oh, and I never owned a dress anything like that - it exists only in the alternate universe of this drawing - an alternate universe in which I appear to have overdosed on powerful stimulant drugs. |
